Advice On Purchasing A Compost Bucket

Published by under gardening

There are many different compost containers for sale. Before you buy one read this article for some suggestions on what to consider about your needs and space. For example, if you have a small family but a large yard you may need a lot of compost, but will you have enough food scraps to fill a large compost bucket? How many times a week do you want to empty your bucket?

You can start your recycling of food scraps by getting a modest kitchen compost bucket. With this, you can keep a few days of items you would otherwise throw out, right on your counter. These, are decorative containers that have filters, so no one will know what is inside. After it is full, you can empty into your compostumbler and get it ready for another few days of food.

A larger compost bucket will be necessary if you have plenty of food scraps. This is not an attractive unit so you might want to keep it underneath the sink in a cabinet. The top has a charcoal filter to alleviate any odors that can occur. If you do not want to be making trips to your compostumbler every day this unit would be best because it holds several days of waste.

When you can’t make trips to your outdoor composter after every meal you will want to get a compost bucket. These were made for keeping food scraps inside without any odor. The buckets are not used for making compost only as temporary storage.

Keeping a compost bucket in your kitchen can have added benefits. If you cut your food scraps into little pieces before putting them in the container it will help your compost decompose faster. Small pieces of organic material decompose faster than large ones. You can have your fertilizer a lot quicker by doing this one extra step.

Before buying any compost bucket take into account the amount of organic material that you will have available, if you have a small family you may not get a good amount of kitchen scraps. This means that you will want to purchase a smaller kitchen container that will still satisfy your needs. If you have one that is too large you may get odors as you wait for it to be full.

Remember a compost bucket is not for making compost. These products are only for storing your food scraps for a few days before you make a trip to your composting bin. You do not want to have too much waste inside your home. So think about how much material you will have in two or three days and only buy the size compost bucket that will hold that much waste.
