Breeding A Fair Number Of Garlic Plants
The right climate and soil conditions are needed for growing garlic. There are three groups of garlic, but we will be discussing the white variety which is found in your grocery store.
How well garlic grows for you will depend on the area where you live. Garlic is grown from Central America to New York. California garlic is rather silver in appearance and the New York White garlic is slightly purple.
Soil preparation for your garlic:
Unless planted in soils containing limestone, the pH should be around 6.5. The soil should be well drained and very fertile. Solid should be limed on a monthly basis. The compost is necessary and should be well rotted.
The best time to plant:
Garlic growing is a long term commitment. If you live in a warm climate, you can plant in early winter. For several weeks, these plants will lie dormant. The winter months are necessary in order to establish the roots and the shoots that will turn into buds. The side buds will turn into garlic cloves as spring sets in. Some gardeners like to grow in early spring, but will face many problems like poor root growth. The plants can be grown in autumn if you’re in an area that’s temperatures are mild. The plant might can withstand the cold if there is heavy mulching. In the spring, the mulch should be removed.
How should I plant garlic?
Garlic is a bulb-like plant. The biggest end is the bottom and the biggest clove seeds are used and placed in the ground so they are standing upright. They should have four inch spaces between them and covered with an inch of dirt.
Growing successfully:
Garlic is difficult to home garden. You must face obstacles like weather, poor seeds, soil conditions, and diseases. It is paramount to have the best drainage of the soil you use for your plants. Commercially grown garlic clove seeds are treated before planting which is something the home gardener cannot accomplish. Home gardeners who live in colder regions will have a better change at a successful crop especially if the seed cloves are commercially treated and if the soil is heavily treated prior to planting with extremely good drainage. Though moisture is a big problem for garlic, during dry periods they must be well watered. You may find that contacting an expert is the best way to make sure you’re using the correct variety of plant for your area. Once planted, the bulbs should be in a dry, ventilated place about 50 degrees.
