Concrete Molds Are Increasingly Popular
As technology has advanced, we’ve seen new materials arriving on the market which can be used for making concrete molds. If you’re interested in finding out how to make them, then you need to realize that the material you should choose depends largely on what sort of creation you have in mind, and also on the size.
Latex molds are very easy to use and, therefore, they have become very popular. You do not have to mix them and you do not need to make any special preparations in order to use them effectively. The main disadvantage with latex molds is that if you are an impatient individual, the 1 to 2 day set time will likely drive you bonkers. A secondary disadvantage with them is that latex is prone to minor shrinkage. Though the shrinkage is minor, it could pose to be a problem for projects with tight dimensional tolerances.
After latex, polysulfide rubber is the next most popular material for making concrete molds. Unlike latex, polysulfide rubber usually comes in two parts which have to be mixed, but even so, it remains extremely popular largely because of its outstanding durability. Over and above being so durable, the material is also reasonably stretchable, which of course makes it an ideal material to work with. In fact, if it wasn’t for the bad smell, I wouldn’t be surprised if more people chose to use polysulfide rubber rather than latex. Let’s just say that the smell is bad enough to make you want to hold your breath, but then again, I wouldn’t really say it’s unbearable.
Of course, there are times when you would be better off using timber, or even steel to making concrete molds, but again, it all boils down to what you intend making. Generally speaking however, latex and polysulfide rubber are undoubtedly the most popular materials being used nowadays. Not only are they both very versatile, but they’re also very affordable.
Even though I have highlighted the most popular materials used to make concrete molds, please be sure to do some research to see exactly which material is most appropriate for your specific project. All projects are different and each project deserves its own considerations.
