Handling The Job Of A Live Electrical Wire

Experts advise the beginners and the novices of the electrical trade to switch off the main power supply before commencing the concerned project. The homeowners who often forget about such general precautions invite possible hazards to their home electrical setup. Misapprehension on that front could prove costly for the structural integrity of the electrical framework. You can determine the same with the help of a voltage tester or digital multi-meter.

However, the electrical emergencies can put you in any situation. The unforeseen complications of an electrical emergency may force you to take rapid and spontaneous action. Some emergencies don’t give you enough time to walk down to the electrical breaker box or the electric fuse. In such a situation, you can control the damage by cutting the electrical wire that is causing it all.

Consider the case of someone getting caught in a fatal electric shock. If the power supply happens to be DC (Direct Current) then you have to forcefully separate the troubled person. There are two ways where your course of action could go. Either you switch off the concerned breaker or dissociate the victim from the contact of the live electrical wire. The first option could take a lot of time for completion which in turn proves costly for the life of the caught person.

The second case appears favorable as it would take lesser time and lesser preparation. Also, it requires presence of mind rather than technical expertise.

While working with the live wire, certain safety measures need to be taken.

Do not try to touch the body of the affected person. Such an action would turn you into another casualty of the accident. Avoid throwing water or any other liquid on the person’s body.

Make sure that you are wearing rubber slippers or shoes. If you are not wearing shoes or slipper then don’t waste time looking for one. Locate a wooden block or stick and try to dissociate the wire from the victim’s body. Focus the strike on the wire rather than the body of the person.

Carefully take away the person from the site and cut the faulty wire with wiring cutters. Render required medical aid to the victim.
