Filters using various filtering technologies like Distillation, Carbon Absorption, Microporous Basic Filtration, Reverse Osmosis and Ultraviolet Radiations are available in the market. What you choose to purchase depends on the results of your water tests and your specific household needs.
Distillation is a process in which water is heated till it starts boiling. The water vapors thus formed are condensed in another vessel to generate pure water. The contaminants of water are left in the liquid vessel only. This method of water filtration is very common and old.
It lacks oxygen and minerals and has a flat taste. Organics such as herbicides and pesticides with boiling points lower than that of water cannot be removed efficiently and can actually become concentrated in the product water. One more disadvantage of using it is the large amount of energy and water used by this filtration system.
Carbon filters work on the concept that a carbon surface can absorb a lot of contaminants. These carbon layers do not allow impurity to pass through it. They easily remove some of the organic chemicals and pesticide residue from the water. Radon can also be completely removed by using a granular activated carbon. In microporous filtration system there are three types of filtration layers: depth, screen and surface. All three serve very different functions. Depth filters are usually used as pre-filters because they are an economical way to remove 98% of suspended solids and protect elements downstream from fouling or clogging. Surface filters remove 99.99% of suspended solids and may be used as either pre-filters or clarifying filters. Microporous membrane (screen) filters are placed at the last possible point in a system to remove the outstanding traces of resin fragments, carbon fines, colloidal particles and microorganisms.
Reverse Osmosis is one of the most popular techniques of cleaning water. These filters use a semi permeable membrane to clean water. The porous size of this membrane is so small that it does not allow any of the contaminant or microorganism to pass through it.
When the water goes for filtration, pressure is applied on water first to stop and then to reverse the osmotic pressure. As a result of this pressure you get highly purified water. It wastes a lot of water in purification process and it is one of its biggest disadvantages.
Ultraviolet radiations are very hazardous for all the living organisms. Mercury lamps generating 254 nm UV light are considered to be good for producing these radiations. When these radiations fall on any microorganism or germ they just inactivate it and frees water from all the harmful germs.
