Container gardening is quickly becoming a favorite alternative to classic gardening.

Due to inadequate space, using the available areas on a patio, porch, or balcony can allow many people to satisfy their desire for a functional garden.

Container gardening is a great way to both fill your home with soothing fragrances and provide healthy and delicious vegetables for all of your families meals.

However, there are a few guidelines that one must follow when using the container gardening method.

1) You want to make sure that your containers will receive adequate amounts of sunlight while maintain ease of access for watering when needed.

Remember that some vegetables, such as cabbage, spinach etc., can thrive in the shade as well as sunlight.

Even though these vegetables will still thrive in shaded areas, you will still want to rotate them in and out of the sunlight so as not to hinder their growth.

2) Though some plants only require watering once daily, some plants may require more frequent hydration depending on varying requirements from specific vegetables.

3) Some ideal container garden candidates include; tomatoes, lettuce and radishes as they are known to be well suited for growth under these conditions.

Eggplants and peppers, both hot and mild, also grow well in container gardens.

4) Selecting the proper soil for your garden is the key. Synthetic soils are usually better for these types of gardens.

Synthetic soils are known to contain a calculated mix of peat moss, perlite, sawdust and other materials that are known to provide vegetables with sufficient nourishment.

Make sure you that your soil will be able to hold an adequate amount of moisture and will not support the growth of weeds.

5) There are many different types of containers available for use in gardens.

Keeping in mind specific requirements for your vegetables, Clay, ceramic, or even plastic containers may be used. You can also opt for more available alternatives such as bushel baskets, drums, gallon cans, tubs or wooden boxes etc.

6) Finally, it is recommended that you take great care while harvesting your vegetables. Additionally, when possible, saving seeds for future use is also encouraged.
