Why I wish my parents had invested in a loft conversion
I have two sisters, both of which I used to share a room with (which we called ‘the nursery’) in my old family home. When I was about six and my sisters eight and ten, my parents finally decided that enough was enough. They were sick of us arguing all the time and, come hell or high water, they were going to find enough space in the house for each of us to have our own rooms.
My eldest sister, naturally, got the nursery, which happens to be the biggest bedroom in the house, bigger even than my parents’ room. My other sister, the middle child, got the guest bedroom, which they later did some demolition and
rebuilding on to make bigger, so it’s in a funny fat ‘L’ shape. And where did I go? The attic, that’s where.
Now, that might sound like the coolest room of all – when I was that age I certainly thought so. It took three years to actually research attic conversions and convert it into a room – it had no floors and no proper walls as a loft, and the ceiling was sloped at a right angle, but I could just stand up straight in the tallest part of it. Sounds like a strange idea for a bedroom? It was.
By the time I actually got into my bedroom I’d grown another couple of inches though, so I ended up having to crawl everywhere. I had miniature furniture as well – my desk had the legs cut off and I used a beanbag as a chair, and my bed was
essentially a mattress on the floor with a piece of wood holding it in. It all sounds pretty horrific, especially when you consider that there was no door and you accessed it via a vertical ladder. I can tell you straight off that I was quickly given a dressing room elsewhere, since getting up a ladder in a towel is like some kind of Crystal Maze puzzle.
When I moved to university and experienced a ‘real’ room for the first time in 16 years, I was consumed with hate every time I went home and had to sleep in that room. And, typically, as soon as I moved out properly my parents decided to get the roof
raised and converted it into a guest bedroom (although what guest is going to want to brave that ladder I’ll never know).
The fact is though, thinking up loft conversion ideas and getting it converted isn’t really that expensive, it’s just that
my parents convinced themselves they wouldn’t be able to afford it and only looked into it once all their kids had moved out and they saw that they had some spare cash floating around.
You don’t have to spend massive amount on it, and you can convert your loft to give you as much space as you need. So, let me give you a word of advice – if you’re thinking about moving your child up into an un-converted loft, don’t even think
about it until you’ve requested a loft conversion quote. Trust me, your child will thank you for it!
Simple Bedroom Decorating Tips | Corporate event Planners
Having a great bedroom is a must no matter what age you are. Even if you spend the majority if your time in other parts of your house having a relaxing and great looking sleeping area is important. Here are some top tips for making sure you have a great bedroom.
When buying things for your room maybe sure to pick a colour or colours that work together and try and keep all the important things within the colour scheme such as curtains, bed sheets, rugs, pictures and other big items. With bedding try and get fitted sheets and pick ones that match the rest of your room. While working at an events agency you learn the importance of keeping things on theme and on topic.
Make sure to get a decent set blinds or curtains. Even if you don’t need a black out curtain you should still make sure you get a nice pair of curtains that keep out the light and fit with your room. These are usually easy to fit and not too expensive.
Figure out your storage areas. You won’t want everything on display so make sure you have decent storage areas to keep your clothes and bits and bobs. There should be enough room that you know where everything is and be able to store stuff without having draws that are full to bursting point.
Pick what you want on display. Not everything needs to be on display so pick a few key items, and make sure you clean them or can get to them easily, things can gather dust very quickly and then become very awkward to clean.
If you are thinking of putting a tv in your room, especially in a smaller room considering if you need a TV. Unless you are living in shared accommodations most of the TV watching will happen in a common area so a TV might not be a necessity. If you have a laptop or computer most of your viewing can also be done on there.
Lighting.
Make sure you get enough lighting that your room. You can get lamps and additional lighting if there isn’t enough light from the main light. Spot lights or tall lamps can be used to great effect or you can rig up LED worm lights or coloured LEDs for additional effect.
If you are thinking of having picture or posters try putting the pictures and posters in frames, it can instantly turn your posters into works of art and makes your room look a lot more mature and less like a students bedroom.
To add a nice touch to your room a couple of candles can look great Candles like Church beeswax candles or scened candles are cheap and look great even in a mans bedroom.
