The Pros And Cons Of Different Bathtubs

Published by Scott Rodgers under gardening

Bathtubs can be produced from variety of materials like: acrylic, fiberglass, cast iron, wood, marble and porcelain. Different materials have various good points and various bad points. You can choose any one among them based on your requirements and the amount of money that you can spend on it.

Fiberglass is a light material so the tubs made of them are also light weighted. They are not so expensive in cost and their installation is also easy. The biggest downside of using fiberglass bathtub is that they could easily get scratched.

Acrylic is similar to fiberglass, but little more costly than fiberglass. Its color is embedded throughout the substance rather than just the surface coat like fiberglass. Thus, the color has a nice high gloss finish and lasts longer. Acrylic is also a good insulator so your water stays warmer longer. It is also easy to clean and is more durable than fiberglass.

Acrylic is such a material that won’t break even if you beat it with a hammer. This property of acrylic tubs make it long lasting. The scratches over this tub can be repaired without much effort.

Porcelain on steel, as the name suggest has a covering of porcelain on the steel. These tubs are very efficient in resisting against acid, corrosion and abrasion. Besides this, such tubs are not affected much by fire and can be easily cleaned. However some of the cheap porcelain tubs make a lot of noise.

Cast iron tubs are very strong, durable and have good weight (2 to 3 hundred pounds). Due to its weight, they don’t generate much noise or sound. When you will consider the cost of these tubs, you will find them little costly. These tubs keep the water hot for long time as compared to other tubs, but they are not big enough to adjust two people together.

Marbles tubs are very luxurious and expensive. They double the beauty of your bathroom. But there are some disadvantages of using a marble tub like: they are prone to get scratches, can’t withstand very high temperature and may break in that case. All these disadvantages make it less convenient to use.

Wood bathtubs are also attractive, but they need high maintenance and are not long lasting as bathtubs made of fiberglass, porcelain, or acrylic. It’s also important to mention that if you put a wood bathtub into your bathroom then the floor has to be waterproof. It’s also advisable to add a floor drain as well.
